1. WHAT ARE COOKIES?

A cookie is a small text file that a web server can store on your computer’s hard drive to save some type of information about you as a user. Cookies are used for various purposes, such as storing data for future visits, recognizing the user to avoid requesting authentication again, recording the pages visited, or saving your preferences in customizable areas. Typically, websites use cookies to obtain statistical information about their pages and analyze the behavior of their clients/users. Cookies used for any of the following purposes are exempt from compliance with the obligations established in Article 22.2 of the LSSI:
  • Exclusively allowing communication between the user’s equipment and the network.
  • Strictly providing a service expressly requested by the user.
Thus, among the exempt cookies are those whose purpose is:
  • “User input” cookies. These are stored on the device when the user enters information on a website (e.g., when filling out a form).
  • Authentication or user identification cookies (session only). Their function is to identify a user when they enter their credentials upon logging in.
  • User security cookies. These are cookies that detect security problems or risks (e.g., those that detect repeated and erroneous connection attempts).
  • Media player session cookies. They allow the playback of multimedia content on the websites visited by the user.
  • Load balancing session cookies. They connect the website server and the user’s server to optimize the transmission of information.
  • User interface personalization cookies. These are cookies that remember user preferences during browsing (e.g., language, regional settings, or browser type).
  • Certain add-on cookies (plug-ins) for exchanging social content. They are used when visiting social networks through a website (e.g., when sharing an article).
The specific uses we make of these technologies are detailed in the following sections.

Third-party cookies: These are those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by us or by a third party, but the information collected is managed by a third party other than the owner of the website. According to their retention period: Session cookies: These are those that have a duration limited to the time the user remains browsing the website, being deleted at the end of the session. Persistent cookies: They remain stored in the user’s terminal for a longer period, facilitating the control of chosen preferences without having to readjust certain parameters on each visit to the website. According to their purpose, cookies can be: Technical cookies: These are essential and strictly necessary for the proper functioning of a website and the use of the various options and services offered (e.g., session maintenance, security elements, sharing content with social networks). Personalization cookies: They allow the user to select or personalize features of the website, such as language or regional settings. Analytical cookies: These are used to create browsing profiles, learn about user preferences, and thus improve the range of products and services. They allow measuring the number of visits, content acceptance, etc. Advertising / marketing cookies: These are those that store information on user behavior obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, allowing the development of a specific profile to show advertising according to said profile.
